James Madison Center for Free Speech

July 3, 2002

Dear Colleague:

The James Madison Center's conference on campaign finance law to be held on July 10-11, 2002, at the J.W. Marriott in Washington D.C. has been cancelled due to a lower than expected response.  We are saddened by the cancellation as the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2002 ('BCRA") is the most sweeping revision of the Federal Election Campaign Act since the post-Watergate amendments of 1974 and will have major ramifications for all those actively participating in our political process.

However, the "Defender of Freedom" awards banquet will still be held on July 10th beginning at 6:30 p.m.  Senator Mitch McConnell and Representative Tom DeLay will be honored for their efforts to defeat BCRA and protect the First Amendment rights of free speech and association of the American people.  House Speaker Dennis Hastert will give the keynote address, the Honorable Edwin Meese III will serve as master of ceremonies and Dr. Richard Land will give the invocation and benediction.

Again, we are saddened by the cancellation of the conference.  However, if you would like to attend the banquet or simply make a donation to assist the James Madison Center in its fight against the BCRA, you may do so on-line at www.jamesmadisoncenter.org or by calling Raeanna S. Moore at 812-232-2434.

Sincerely,

The James Madison Center for Free Speech
James Bopp, Jr.
Conference Chairman and General Counsel
